Solar Ground Mounts & Pergolas

What are solar pergolas?
Solar Pergolas are photovoltaic (PV) canopy solutions that can be added to either a property’s existing structure or custom-built. Solar pergolas are specifically designed to face optimal directions and angles for maximum sun exposure. Solar Pergolas attached to the house can be nice, yet they have to be optimal. Meaning, we’re not going to install a solar pergola on the ground level of the north side of a 2-story home.

What are ground mounts?
Ground mounts are another great alternative to roof mounted panels. Ground mounts are typically installed somewhere on your property at an ideal location to maximize sunlight exposure. Ground mounts can vary widely in size and can be custom designed for your needs. The ground mount array doesn’t take a lot of space, perhaps 60’ wide x 15’ back. You want to have it in a sunny spot, so if someone has a big yard but lots of trees, it still may not work. A nice open area that we can face it south is ideal with no or minimal tree shading. Also it’s good to have enough property of let’s say on an acre so the install location can meet all of the proper required setbacks from property lines, well and septic, and an area that isn’t taking up junior’s lacrosse practice spot.

How much energy can ground mounts produce?
Typically, solar ground mounts can produce the amount of energy needed to power a home. Average systems range from 10-20kW. In cases which the system creates excess energy, homeowners can sell that energy back to the grid. We custom design all ground mounts to meet and/or exceed your power needs, talk with our team today to get started.

Is it better to install solar on a rooftop or on the ground?
First of all, to optimize your overall net energy production and cost savings, it’s always best to utilize as much sun-facing square footage as possible! This means if your rooftop is wide open to the sun and the panels will fit on there nicely and make all of your power, then the roof is the way to go. Obviously, a ground mount costs more since there is a lot more to the project such as the large aluminum frame that is constructed to hold the panels and the concrete footers in the ground and the trench to get the wires/conduit over to the house. Now, if the roof is not a great candidate and you have plenty of yard space, then a ground mount may be the way to go. We can even run the numbers for both options, sometimes a ground mount facing perfect south will cost less than a roof mount facing east with tree shading because we had to put more panels on the roof to make up for the inefficiency difference. That’s why you contact a Solar Broker because we have all the options and will figure all of that out and not just push you toward one way or the other. The numbers will usually have the answer. In the end, we can show you the numbers and if it makes sense to go solar at your house since it gets plenty of sunshine, we will show you the numbers that going solar will always beat your current situation which is paying the utility, every month, for the rest of your life and owning zero of it. You can live at your house for another 30 years and you’ll never own that grid out front haha, I guarantee it. Yet when you go solar, it’s yours, so even if you have a monthly financed payment each month at least you are paying off your system and not theirs. You own your home, you own your car, so why keep renting your electricity from a company that even if no fault of their own will constantly increase. If someone thinks that energy prices are going to drop, that’s unfortunately only laughable at this point.
